Questions people ask about this service

Reviewed August 2026. Requirements change — confirm with the receiving authority before lodging.

Which form applies to a foreign national or overseas entity?

Form 49AA is the application used by individuals and entities that are not Indian citizens or Indian-incorporated bodies. The current form, field rules and accepted identity and address documents are published by the authorised PAN service provider, so confirm the version in force on the day you apply.

Do my supporting documents have to be in English?

Documents that are not in English are submitted with an English translation. Where the issuing country is not English-speaking, the practical set is a faithful translation plus the authentication step the receiving office asks for.

Apostille or Indian consular attestation — which one?

It depends on the issuing country. Documents issued in a Hague Apostille country normally travel with an Apostille; documents from a non-Apostille country are attested through the foreign ministry and then the Indian embassy or consulate. Verify the route with the Indian mission covering your country before paying any fee.

What is the most common reason a PAN application is returned?

Name and date-of-birth mismatches between the passport and the supporting documents, an address that does not match the proof supplied, and missing or wrongly ordered authentication stamps. Matching every field to the passport before submitting removes most of these.

Can you submit the PAN application for me?

We prepare and certify the translation and can explain the sequence of authentication steps. Filing the application itself is done by you or by your Indian tax adviser, who is responsible for the tax position.

Who needs an Indian PAN card?

Individuals and entities with Indian tax obligations or specified financial transactions in India, including non-residents in defined circumstances. The Indian tax authority sets the eligibility rules, and they change from time to time.

What documents does a foreign applicant usually provide?

Proof of identity and address, commonly a passport and a supporting document, in the form the Indian authority accepts — frequently notarised or apostilled, and translated where not in English.

Can a PAN application be handled from Thailand?

The document preparation, notarisation, apostille and translation steps are handled here. Processing and issuance belong to the Indian authority and its authorised agencies, and neither timing nor outcome is within our control.
