Thai divorce certificate and divorce agreement translation

In short

Translate the divorce certificate together with the registration record, and add the divorce agreement or court judgment where custody, property or the right to remarry is being assessed. Keep the registration number and registrar's endorsement in the translation.

A divorce registered in Thailand produces a divorce certificate (Kor Ror 7) and a divorce registration record (Kor Ror 6), and often a divorce agreement setting out custody and property terms. A court divorce produces a judgment instead. Which document answers the question depends on what the receiving authority is assessing.

Issued by: District registrar (Amphoe / Khet), or the court where the divorce was granted by judgment

When it is used

  • Proving the right to remarry in a partner or fiancé visa application
  • Custody or parental responsibility evidence for a child included in an application
  • Civil status evidence for overseas registration of a new marriage
  • Property and financial matters following divorce

What to prepare

  • Divorce certificate (Kor Ror 7) and, where available, the registration record (Kor Ror 6)
  • The divorce agreement, if custody or property terms are relevant
  • A certified copy of the court judgment where the divorce was by court order
  • Passport copies of the parties named

Step by step

  1. Work out what is being assessed

Right to remarry, custody, or property division each call for different documents from the same divorce.

  2. Collect the full set

Request the registration record from the district office, or a certified copy of the judgment from the court, where these are missing.

  3. Translate in full

Every clause of the agreement or judgment is translated, along with registration numbers, dates and endorsements.

  4. Certify for the destination

Court documents are often subject to stricter conditions; check whether the receiving body wants a certified copy of the original attached.

Common reasons for rejection

  • Submitting the certificate alone when custody terms are being assessed.
  • Translating only part of a multi-page agreement.
  • Using an uncertified photocopy of a court judgment.
  • Names of the parties spelled inconsistently across documents.

FAQ

Is the divorce certificate enough to prove I can remarry?

For many authorities the divorce certificate with the registration record answers the question. Some also ask for a certificate of marital status; check what the receiving body listed.

My divorce was by court judgment. What do I send?

A certified copy of the judgment from the court, and the registration record if the divorce was subsequently registered.

Does the whole divorce agreement have to be translated?

Where the agreement is submitted, it is translated in full. Selective translation of favourable clauses is not accepted.

The divorce was granted overseas. Can you translate it?

Yes, into English or Thai as needed. Recognition of a foreign divorce is decided by the receiving authority, not by the translation.
