Is there an official 'Ministry of Justice certified translator' in Thailand?
Thailand does not operate a public register of sworn translators in the way many civil-law countries do. Translators work in court proceedings under the rules of the courts and the Office of the Judiciary, and translation associations maintain their own membership lists. Treat any claim of a single official government translator licence with caution and ask which body issued it.

Which translation do Australian authorities want — a Thai court translator's or a NAATI one?
For documents going to Australian authorities, the reference point is NAATI certification. A Thai court or association translation is prepared for use inside Thailand and is not a substitute; the two serve different systems and are sometimes both needed for the same matter.

What is consular legalisation of a translation and when is it needed?
The Department of Consular Affairs can certify the translator's signature on a Thai-to-English translation so the document can be used with foreign authorities or embassies in Thailand. It authenticates a signature, not the quality of the translation. It is required when the destination authority or an embassy asks for a legalised set — not for a standard Australian visa lodgement.

Can one translation be used for both a Thai court and an Australian authority?
Usually not without rework. The formatting, certification wording and lodgement channel differ. Tell us both destinations at the start and we prepare each set to the right specification rather than reusing one and hoping it passes.
How long does consular certification of a translation take?
Processing time is set by the Department of Consular Affairs and varies with queue length, the service channel used and whether the document must first be certified by another agency. Check the current service times on the department's own site before committing to a deadline.

Do court documents need to be translated in full?
Yes. Judgments, orders and case files are translated in full, including case numbers, dates, seals, signature blocks and any endorsements on the reverse. Extracts are only acceptable when the receiving body has asked for a specific extract in writing.
Is a Ministry of Justice registered translator accepted in Australia?
For Australian government purposes the credential normally expected is NAATI. A Thai court-registered translator serves Thai court proceedings. Using the right credential for the destination is the point — they are not interchangeable.
