Case studies: departing Australia superannuation payment (DASP)

Short answer

DASP claims are usually held up by identity copies that were never certified to the fund's standard, or by a name mismatch with no registry record behind it.

What is DASP?

Departing Australia Superannuation Payment is the process by which an eligible former temporary resident claims their superannuation after leaving Australia and their visa has ceased to be in effect. Eligibility conditions and the claim channels are published by the ATO and the fund holding the money.

What documents are usually needed?

Typically passport identity pages, evidence of visa status and departure, the fund's member details, and identity documents in the form the fund accepts — often certified copies. Requirements differ by fund and by claim value, so start from the fund's own checklist.

How should Thai documents be translated for a claim?

Use a certified translation that reproduces the source page for page with the translator's certification statement, so the fund can match names and dates to the account record. Where the fund names a standard such as NAATI certification, follow that standard rather than a general translation.

What if the name on my super account does not match my passport?

Funds normally require evidence linking the two forms of the name — a marriage or name-change record, or a registry document, translated where it is not in English. Fixing the mismatch before lodging is faster than answering a query after the claim has been opened.

Do the copies need to be certified?

Most funds require certified copies of identity documents and publish the categories of certifier they accept, sometimes including Australian consular officers overseas. Uncertified scans are a routine reason a claim stalls.

Can I lodge the claim myself online?

Yes — the ATO provides an online application, and funds also accept their own forms. People generally seek help with the document side: certification of identity records, translations, and reconciling name or date discrepancies across records.

Can I still claim if the money has been transferred to the ATO?

Unclaimed superannuation of former temporary residents may be transferred to the ATO, and a claim can then be made to the ATO instead of the fund. The evidence requirements are similar; the destination of the application changes.

How long does it take?

Processing time varies with the fund, the completeness of the evidence and the checks required, so no fixed figure can be promised. The variable you control is document quality: a complete, correctly certified and translated set avoids the request-for-information loop.
