In short
A marriage certificate in a language other than English must be accompanied by an English translation. Translations produced in Australia require a NAATI certified translator; translations produced elsewhere must identify the translator in full. Where a previous marriage has ended, the divorce decree or death certificate is normally required with the same certification.

Do both spouses' documents need translating?
Any document in a language other than English that forms part of the application needs a translation, regardless of which spouse it belongs to.
Is a religious marriage certificate acceptable?
It depends on the receiving body. Where civil registration exists, the civil record is the document normally expected; a religious certificate may be lodged as supporting evidence.
Can you certify a translation someone else made?
No. A certified translator can only certify work they have produced or fully revised themselves, because certification attests to accuracy.
What if names appear differently on older documents?
