Reviewed August 2026. Requirements change — confirm with the receiving authority before lodging.
Which visa documents usually need translation?
Anything supporting identity, relationship, character, qualifications or finances that is not in English: birth and marriage certificates, divorce decrees, household or family registration, police certificates, transcripts, employment references and bank documents. The exact list depends on the visa subclass.

Does Home Affairs accept translations made outside Australia?
Home Affairs guidance distinguishes between translations made in Australia, which should be by a NAATI accredited translator, and translations made outside Australia, which must show the translator's full name, address, telephone number and details of their qualifications and experience in the language being translated. Read the current wording on the Home Affairs site before lodging.

How recent must a police certificate be?
Validity windows are set by the receiving authority and differ between document types and visa programs. Because a certificate can expire while an application is being prepared, check the accepted window before you order the translation.
Can you advise me on my visa application?
No. Immigration assistance in Australia is regulated, and we are not a registered migration agent (OMARA) or a legal practice. We prepare and certify translations, and we point you to the responsible authority's published requirements.
Does the Department of Home Affairs accept scanned translations?
Online lodgement is normally made with uploaded documents, and a digitally signed certified PDF is the usual format. Requirements can differ by stream and by case officer request, so follow the instruction attached to your application.

How should translated documents be named when uploading?
Use a clear pattern such as document type, holder name and language — for example BirthCertificate_Surname_EN. Upload the original and the translation together where the form allows it, so the assessor sees the pair without searching.
Do I translate every page of a bank statement?
Translate the full period the authority asked for, in full. Extracting only favourable pages reads as an incomplete document and commonly triggers a request for further information, which costs more time than the extra pages would have.
What if my case officer asks for a different translation format?
Follow the case officer's instruction — it overrides general guidance. Send us the exact wording of the request and the deadline, and the set can be reissued in the format asked for.
The case officer asked for additional translations after I lodged. What now?
Send us the request wording and the deadline in the same message as the documents. Requests for further information usually name the specific document and the format required, and working from that wording avoids a second round. We cannot correspond with the department on your behalf — that is regulated immigration assistance and we are not a registered migration agent.

Which relationship documents need translating for a partner visa?
Anything evidencing identity, the relationship history and shared commitments that is not in English: marriage or de facto registration, birth certificates, household registration, joint financial records, statutory declarations from family, and correspondence relied on as evidence. The department publishes what each stream expects; work from that checklist rather than a generic list.

Should I translate documents before or after the health examination and HAP ID?
They are separate tracks. Health examinations are arranged through the department's own process and panel clinics, and do not depend on your translated set. Translate the documents the visa checklist requires when you are assembling the application, and keep an eye on any document that expires while you wait.

Does the whole house registration book need translating, or only the page with my name?
Translate every page that carries information about the applicant and the household composition being relied on, including the cover page identifying the address and the entries showing changes. Submitting a single page out of context invites a request for the rest. If the receiving body specifies particular pages, follow that in writing.
My Thai document was issued in English already. Does it still need translating?
If the document is genuinely issued in English by the Thai authority, it does not need a translation — the requirement applies to documents not in English. Bilingual documents where only part is in English still need the Thai portions translated. When in doubt, send the scan and we will tell you honestly whether a translation adds anything.

How many months of financial documents does a student visa need translated?
The department sets the evidentiary period, and it varies by stream and by the applicant's circumstances rather than being one fixed number. Read the current requirement for your subclass, then translate the full statement set covering that period — partial months are a common cause of follow-up requests.

The applicant is a minor. What extra documents are usually involved?
Typically the birth certificate showing both parents, evidence of parental consent or custody arrangements where only one parent travels, and school records where the stream requires them. Court orders about custody are translated in full including the reasoning pages. Requirements differ by subclass, so confirm the list with the department first.

My visa was refused over a translation issue. Can I reapply?
Review rights and reapplication options depend on the visa and the refusal ground, and only the department's decision record and a registered migration agent or lawyer can advise on that. What we can do is review the translated set against the authority's published translation rules and reissue anything that did not meet the format, so the next lodgement is clean on that point.

Which partner visa documents most often need translation?
Identity and relationship evidence: birth certificates, marriage or divorce records, household registration, joint financial documents, statutory declarations from relatives, and any correspondence in another language that you rely on. The exact set depends on the subclass and on what you are using as evidence.

How many pages of a household registration should be translated?
Translate every page that carries information about the people relevant to your application, including the cover page with the house number and any pages showing entries and cancellations. Officers compare entries across pages, so a single page rarely satisfies them.
What is a request for further information and how does translation cause one?
It is a written request from the decision maker for documents or clarification, with a deadline. Missing translations, partial translations, illegible scans and unexplained name differences are frequent triggers. Preparing a complete, consistent set is the practical way to reduce that risk.

I have documents from a third country. Are they treated differently?
The same principle applies: anything not in English needs a translation, and the format depends on whether the translation is made inside or outside Australia. Some third-country documents also need legalisation or an apostille before they will be accepted as authentic.

Do my children's documents need translating as well?
Yes, where they are part of the application: birth certificates, custody or guardianship orders, school records and consent letters from a non-travelling parent. Custody documents are read closely, so translate them in full rather than in summary.
Can you tell me whether my visa application will be approved?
No. Immigration assistance in Australia is a regulated activity and we are not a registered migration agent or a legal practice. We translate and certify documents and point you to the responsible authority's published requirements.

Do bank statements and payslips need certified translation?
If they are not in English and you are relying on them, yes. Financial documents are usually long, so tell us early whether the receiving body accepts a summary schedule of a statement or requires every page.
My marriage certificate is handwritten and hard to read. What now?
Request a fresh certified extract from the issuing registry. A certified translation must record unreadable text as illegible, and an illegible note on a key relationship document invites a further-information request.
Should I translate documents before or after a police certificate arrives?
Order the police certificate first when it has a validity window, then translate it together with the rest of the set. Translating early can mean paying twice if the certificate expires before lodgement.

Does a student visa need the same translation standard?
Yes. Academic transcripts, completion certificates, financial capacity documents and any sponsorship letters that are not in English follow the same translation rules as other visa programs.

Do I upload the translation, the original, or both?
Most lodgement channels expect both — the source document and its translation — so the officer can compare them. Upload them as a matched pair with clear file names rather than as one merged bundle where pages can be missed.
What if my visa is refused and I need documents for review?
Review bodies work to their own filing rules and deadlines. We can reissue or extend translations for the review file, but advice on the review itself must come from a registered migration agent or a lawyer.
