Thai documents commonly certified for overseas use, and how to prepare them
In short
Apostilles apply to public documents: civil registry records, education records from state-recognised institutions, court documents, and documents certified by a public officer. Private documents must first be certified by an official with legal authority. Which categories can actually be lodged is set by Department of Consular Affairs announcements.
Civil registry and personal status
Birth certificates, house registration, marriage and divorce records, name change certificates, and certificates of marital status. Request a current copy from the registry office and check that the English spelling you intend to use matches your passport.
Education and professional records
Degree certificates, transcripts, letters of enrolment, professional licences, and employment reference letters. These must be issued by the institution or professional council, signed by an officer whose authority can be verified.
Police and legal documents
Police clearance certificates, court judgments, certified powers of attorney, and company documents issued by the Department of Business Development. Validity periods are set by the receiving body, so confirm them before requesting fresh copies.
