Bank and financial document translation for Australian visa applications
Short answer
Thai financial documents such as bank passbooks, account statements, bank letters confirming financial position, payslips, employment income letters and tax records are normally submitted to Australian authorities in English. Translations produced inside Australia must be done by a NAATI-certified translator; translations produced outside Australia must show the translator's full name, address, contact details and qualifications. Every figure, date, account name and currency must match the original exactly.

| Delivery | PDF with digital stamp and signature; printed copies when the receiving body asks |
| What to prepare | Bank-issued originals, all pages legible, including pages with no transactions |
| Document age | Most bodies want recently issued statements; confirm the accepted period before ordering |
Documents usually translated
Bank passbook and cover page
Account holder name, account number, bank and branch, plus the transaction lines as printed. Provide every page that carries entries and the latest update page.
Bank statement
Bank-issued and stamped, showing the period, opening and closing balances and the currency. The translation keeps the same table structure and figures.
Bank letter confirming funds
A letter confirming the balance on a stated date, usually submitted together with historical statements that show where the funds came from.
Payslips and employer income letters
Regular income, position and start date, used to explain the source of funds held in the account.
Tax records
Personal income tax filings and withholding certificates, used to evidence longer-term income.
Financial sponsor documents
Sponsorship letters, the sponsor's own account documents and proof of relationship such as a house registration or birth certificate.
Step by step
1. Confirm what the receiving body needs
Visa subclasses and institutions differ on document types and how many months of history they accept. Check the Home Affairs document page or the institution's letter before ordering anything from the bank.
2. Obtain stamped bank originals
Ask the bank to issue statements and confirmation letters directly. Mobile-app screenshots are refused by many bodies.
3. Send high-resolution colour scans
Scan every page without cropping. Figures and bank stamps must be legible. Tell us the English spelling of names as shown in the passport.
4. Translate and check the numbers twice
The translator transcribes every line, then a reviewer re-checks balances, dates and currency against the original before the certification stamp is applied.
5. Receive the certified file and submit with originals
Always submit the translation together with a copy of the original, and keep the source files in case the body asks for verification later.
Common mistakes
- • Submitting app screenshots instead of bank-issued statements, which triggers a request for new documents
- • Missing pages, especially pages with no transactions, leaving gaps in the period covered
- • Name spelling that does not match the passport or the rest of the document set
- • A balance or currency figure that differs from the original, even by one digit
- • Submitting the translation without a copy of the original
- • Statements older than the period the receiving body accepts
- • Large deposits with no supporting explanation of their source, which invites further questions
Frequently asked questions
Do financial documents have to be translated by a NAATI translator?
It depends on where the translation is produced. Translations made inside Australia must be done by a NAATI-certified translator. Translations made outside Australia must carry the translator's full name, address, contact details and qualifications. In practice a NAATI-stamped translation is the format Australian officers see most often, so it reduces the chance of a further-information request.
How many months of bank statements are required?
There is no single answer. Visa subclasses and institutions set their own periods, commonly three to six months, but always follow the receiving body's letter or the Home Affairs document requirements page.
Can I translate only the pages that show a balance?
That is not advisable. Translate every page in the submitted period. Missing pages break the sequence of entries and can suggest that only selected parts were disclosed.
Are mobile banking screenshots accepted?
Many bodies refuse them because they carry no bank stamp or signature. Request a bank-issued and stamped statement, then have that translated.
How should bank and branch names be rendered in English?
Use the bank's own official English name and keep the account number exactly as printed. If the document already shows an English name, follow it for consistency across the document set.
What is the difference between a bank letter and a statement?
A bank letter confirms the balance on a specific date. A statement shows movement across a period. Many bodies ask for both so they can see the current balance and where the money came from.
What extra documents are needed if a parent is the financial sponsor?
Typically the sponsor's own financial documents, a letter confirming they will fund the costs, and proof of relationship such as a birth certificate or house registration, all translated into English.
Should the currency be shown in the translation?
Yes, state the currency as it appears in the original, for example THB. Do not convert to another currency yourself; if an equivalent value is required, attach a separate exchange-rate document.
Do financial documents also need consular legalisation or an apostille?
That depends on the destination. Most Australian visa submissions need only a properly certified translation, but some bodies or other countries ask for additional authentication, so confirm before ordering.
How long does the work take?
It depends on page count and scan quality. A statement running to dozens of pages needs far more transcription and checking time than a single-page letter. Send your submission deadline with the files so the queue can be planned accurately.
