Interpreting at police interviews and for daily records in Thailand

An interview with a suspect or witness who does not understand Thai requires an interpreter to render questions and answers consecutively. The interpreter usually identifies themselves, is named in the statement record, and signs to confirm the rendering was accurate.
Confirm with the investigating officer first
The station handling the matter, the interview time, the language pair, and the form the interpreter will sign. Ask whether attendance by telephone or video is permitted, as practice differs between areas.
Impartiality of the interpreter
Agencies commonly refuse to accept a party, relative or interested person as interpreter because it undermines the reliability of the statement. Use an external interpreter with no connection to the matter.
Documents that usually follow
A daily record, statement or police report often needs an English translation for insurers, embassies or overseas agencies. That is document translation work, not interpreting.
